The largest public market was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Embilipitiya. The market was constructed in fulfilling an undertaking in the Mahinda Chintana and for the benefit of consumers, farmers and agro-based cultivators.
Addressing the gathering, President Rajapaksa said that despite various agreements between different parties, he was ready to march forward with the political parties in his coalition. He reiterated his commitment to continue with the Government's programme to bring prosperity to all citizens. The President also pointed out his Government's role in introducing programmes to produce knowledgeable children for the country.
The building complex, constructed at a cost of 150 million rupees was executed under the direction of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary - Ministry of Defence and Urban Development and the Urban Development Authority. The public market, built with modern features can accommodate 1,000 vendors.
